I spent 11 September days in Maryland Shock Trauma with my friends Mssrs Ventilator, Oxy & Contin. I am now doing PT 3x/week and might be driving again by December.
My Spidi leathers,
Held gloves, Arai helmet, Carbon-fiber back protector, Sidi Vertigo boots and mouthguard appear to have done their jobs as designed. Alas, none of this $2400 kit survived for a repeat performance. I’m glad I don’t have complicated hand & finger rehab to do and am still all fingers and toes.
One time approaching pit-out I failed to secure the gauntlet strap on my gloves. An observant and experienced control rider noticed this and stopped me for the correction.
Some here might say, “Well, that’s track and no concern of mine.” Even among professional racers it is commonly reckoned that the dangers one faces on the road are as great and almost always greater than those in a nicely-controlled track environment. Some don’t even have motorcycle licenses for the road.
Value of one’s hands:
I’m a database engineer. Since I can’t make my living with my mouth, my hands, like Tom describes, are vital to what pays these BMW bills. Additionally, there’s a phenomenon in IT called “Thinking with your fingers.” Many of us find ourselves unable to process as well disconnected from the kbd.
All this talk of false economies seems silly.
Old British phrase:
“Penny-wise, Pound-foolish”
$2400 v all fingers and toes … I’ll take it.
Still awaiting the disability checks, I am
Sincerely yours
