- The power of a 2 stroke engine is amazing. It is on and off. It is a skill to ride. Riders weight of 170 is not the factor. 200+ yes. The power delivery on a ninja 250 is like a riding lawn mower compared to the CR80.
- Like all two strokes if you do not have throttle control, you will high side. Please watch any GP racing in the 80s and 90s. All were two strokes. All of the riders were very skilled and highly respected the engines. High siding came from no where, because of the harsh power delivery of the 2 stroke. The 4 strokes they are racing today make bad riders look good. Especially with electronics.
- People are making better laps times on 4 strokes, because they are easier to ride and they are not scared of the power delivery. But their skill will only improve a little with time. 4 strokes allow you to make errors.
- If you want to learn throttle control, rescue a slide, and hold corner speed, I can not think of any other bike besides this one that would help with all of that. Or the Moriwaki MH80R. PLEASE READ This describes everything I just said above and below for your Ninja.
- Adults race, pocket bikes, nsr50’s, ysr50’s, KTM 60 supermotos, and other similar bikes. They also install CR80’s in these smaller frames. There are leagues, organizations and they are very serious.
I can put you in touch with a road racer or two if you want their emails.-
the ninja250 will still be a learning tool. The are super heavy, do not brake well, do not handle well and have no power. If you can ride fast on that, you can ride fast on anything. But if you wreck with the Ninja, it is going to hurt real bad. The CR80 is incredibly light.

- I liked that bike, but I did feel like it was trying to kill me.
- More power to you! I learned more in one season of riding that 85 than I did 3 years of riding a 600RR. Sometimes re-starting your learning on a much smaller bike can teach you so much about control and making the most out of a small amount of power. I used to dream about bigger sportbikes and “going fast.” I now have 3 bikes all 250cc or under and have never been faster or in more control.
