So, last Wednesday morning I skip work, drive the Element 80 miles west to Leesburg where I sees and rides a spunky, showroom-clean, mint, little Ninja250.
So, there I am Wednesday night, flipping up my belly, rubbing various unguents into my various scars.
The woman starts giving me an earful about “flirting with death.”
1. “i don’t think i can be around if you do that?”
2. “i want to know how you’re thinking about this”
3. “i didn’t get here by putting lids on blenders”
4. “why would you do something that can kill you?”
5. “you had a good run”
6. “i won’t expose your son to bike stuff … damn right you won’t”
7. “come August you’re going to ride and I don’t think I can be around for that”
8. “what do i do about this with Tayen?”
9. “i love your lovely mind … i don’t want to see you diminished”
10. “you could end up in a wheelchair”
11. “hypocritical, as if you think i’m the only one introducing risk”
12. “not being logical or rational”
13. “you just do what you want”
14. “you’re pretty damn lucky to have had us around”
15. “as many concussions as you’ve had”
16. “horses are almost as dangerous”
17. “you’ve been dicking me around the last year with this bike business”
18. “sure you didn’t buy that bike, but that night you’re looking at motorcycle stuff online, and at your Mom’s house”
19. “it’s like you’re flirting with death”
20. “my mother drank herself to death, i had to watch her do it, just said she liked the taste … like you say you just like to ride”
21. “i’ve had a lot of death in my life”
22. “eldercare? i did all that in high school while my father died of cancer”
23. “what about what you would miss, Haley’s graduation, Haley’s first love, first child”
24. “Can we start a discussion about how to approach such a thing with Tayen?”
25. “I remember you saying when we first talked on the phone tha you wold not ever — how did you put it? Not expose him, talk about it in front of him. “
