El circuito BeaverRun, north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 2008

  1. Ran into instructor Allan from Pittsburgh up, met his brother and his nephew motarding. Said he’s been very busy with his flying;
  2. Got the Pridmore defensive line lesson reinforced there, when another rookie did a dodgy inside pass on Turn #1 — definitely did not “pass with authority.” I should have taken ownership of that line. Got it on video from Shadow Video. Allan mentioned that he’d prefer to see STT teach the defensive line as well.
  3. STT taught braking/blipping at the same time. I wasn’t comfortable trying that. I thought I remembered Reg downshifting AMAP to scrub speed, then braking to tune up corner entry?
  4. I did an experiment: ran one session in 4th gear only, no brakes; then session in 5th gear only, no brakes; i really missed the sense of control I learned from engine braking and throttle management; really had to ease/smooth my way into the corners and still felt loosey-goosey;
  5. Learned why I tend to apex early — i’m looking at the apex instead of past it;
  6. Happy moment: at end of Sunday, instructor said “I’d hate to see you on something smaller,” complimentary about my progression through the weekend; we went from 1:30 –> 1:24 –> 1:17, 1:16s consistently on the north circuit;
  7. I’ve found a couple people with 2001 f4i bikes that are selling, one track-ready, one stocker. I’m going to wait until January when a CD matures to make a decision, and see what the economy’s doing before pulling the trigger on a track bike.
  8. Lastly, rode a 600 for the first time, some comments on that below in msg to my parents;
  9. Still running those Dunlop Qualifiers, very happy with them. Planning to ride past Mortons E/R Spartanburg this Friday on them.
