. . .
Ran into instructor Allan from Pittsburgh up, met his brother and his nephew motarding. Said he’s been very busy with his flying;
Got the Pridmore defensive line lesson reinforced there, when another rookie did a dodgy inside pass on Turn #1 — definitely did not
“pass with authority.” I should have taken ownership of that line. Got it on video from Shadow Video. Allan mentioned
that he’d prefer to see STT teach the defensive line as well.
STT taught braking/blipping at the same time. I wasn’t comfortable trying that. I thought I remembered Reg downshifting AMAP to scrub
speed, then braking to tune up corner entry?
I did an experiment: ran one session in 4th gear only, no brakes; then session in 5th gear only, no brakes; i really missed the sense of
control I learned from engine braking and throttle management; really had to ease/smooth my way into the corners and still
felt loosey-goosey;
Learned why I tend to apex early — i’m looking at the apex instead of past it;
Happy moment: at end of Sunday, instructor said “I’d hate to see you on something smaller,” complimentary about my progression
through the weekend; we went from 1:30 –> 1:24 –> 1:17, 1:16s consistently on the north circuit;
I’ve found a couple people with 2001 f4i bikes that are selling, one track-ready, one stocker. I’m going to wait until January when a CD
matures to make a decision, and see what the economy’s doing before pulling the trigger on a track bike.
Lastly, rode a 600 for the first time, some comments on that below in msg to my parents;
Still running those Dunlop Qualifiers, very happy with them. Planning to ride past Mortons E/R Spartanburg this Friday on them.
Peper and I looked at the vid last night. I’ve gotten smoother and didn’t look nearly the awkward dork i expected. Had two very
good instructors, 1:3 ixr:student ratio, and stuck with them well past class-time, all day. Regular meds, no caffeine, little sugar,
no red-meat or big lunch. Also on Day 1 I skipped a session and took a nap in the van.
I put myself in the Novice-3 group, lowest of the 3 ability groups, slowest of the slow, told them i’d be there if/until they kick me
out one of these days :o) On the vid you see that very rarely do i get above 60-70 mph. riders with any time under their belt
realize that one thing you owe other riders is predictability, so I’m striving for that and smoothness first.
I asked another rider to take my bike out. He came back w shite-eating grin, said, “this thing is so planted, so stable,
suspension’s set up just right and loads of grunt” I took his out and saw what he meant. Betsy Beemer is ever so much more
forgiving than the race rice rockets. Mine is heavier w lower CoG. With the cylinders and my chopped seat, I ride much further
down into the bike than others. She is big-boned tho’, feels more like steer-wrestlin’
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Luke2.tif2004-05-19.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Luke2.tif2004-05-19.jpg
than waltzing Matilda. Got another guy, seasoned 65-year old racer, w boxer experience to check my suspension and he, too,
approved. Just wanted to make sure that i’ve got it dialed-in safely.
Good information! Those are helpful tips on tactics and etiquette, too.
We had a wheelie boy in Novice, too. “I passed 8 guys … You need to
move me up to intermediate … ” Well, they did. Next session he
binned his first zx10. Next day he binned his second zx10. Took out
another junior on a zx10 and got harmlessly slightly run over by a
control rider. Waa-Waa. His father and girlfriend were with, so he
earned a deficit of cool points. And made no friends in the paddock,
either.
It would be great to be partners in crime next season, though I reckon
I’ll need some warm-up days in Novice to re-assess any readiness for
Intermed.
LOL! Jekyll and Hyde…I see. I vaguely remember seeing a track day photo

drop clip-ons belo triple-clamp
Seven months and 4,000 miles ago when I first laid eyes on what was to be my new ride, I looked suspiciously at the location
of the clip-ons mounted below the triple clamp. Not being in an age group considered spring chicken material, I figured that I
just have to put them back in the original location above the triple clamp….right? So up they went.
Well as I became more and more aqainted with the bike, it’s idiosyncrasies and the way it handles I was finding myself in a
position lower over the tank when negotiating them fun twisties. Today it occured to me to re-think clip-on location and did just
that…..back they went below the triple clamp. It is only a 10 minute job so what the heck, just try it.
So happens that it is cloudy today in my part of the desert, still over the century mark but what the hey…good time for a test
ride. Must say that I really like the change, much more natural place to be for me. ‘Twas only a short jaunt of 40 miles or
so….the jury is still out on the wrist factor but the fun factor went up high enough that I am hoping that I can adjust to the new
position with time.

I did an experiment: ran one session in 4th gear only, no brakes; then session in 5th gear only, no brakes; i really missed the sense of control I learned from engine braking and throttle management; really had to ease/smooth my way into the corners and still felt loosey-goosey;
Learned why I tend to apex early — i’m looking at the apex instead of past it;
Happy moment: at end of Sunday, instructor said “I’d hate to see you on something
