Job interview @ the California Superbike School

  1. 1. Have you already taken the Superbike School (since 1995, preferably Level 1 and 2)?
Level 1
September 2011
  1. 2. Have you roadraced?
  • • Testing for license at end of 2012 season
  • • Will start racing beginning of 2013 season
  1. 3. Are you already pretty fast? (don’t have to be a track record holder, but can’t be slow).
Yes
  1. 4. Are you friendly and personable–enjoy talking with people?
Yes
  1. 1. I can find something interesting and/or a way to connect with almost everyone I meet
  2. 2. Please see my client comments under the “Excellent Communication and Observation Skills” section below.\
  3. 3. Attentive listener to speech and body language
  1. 4. Do you learn new things fairly quickly?
Yes
I absorb new information quickly, and can brief it back in a coherent manner.
Here’s are 2 examples:
Information Technology Training:
  1. 1. Learned and taught advanced database skills to teammates in time-sensitive situation.
  2. 2. Learned Oracle Database Engineering skills that accelerated and innovated software development and enhanced application security
Military Training
  1. 1. At the U.S. Army National Training Center (NTC) I produced multi-media “7-minute tape” summaries of Force-on-Force operations.
  2. 2. This required thorough, rapid and intense preparation throughout the night before an operation, reading and comprehension of brigade and battalion task force operations orders and representation of same in graphic and video modes.
  3. 3. Once units crossed the line of departure I had to monitor and capture battlefield events, portray them in graphics and integrate video and audio feeds into the 7-minute tape, the purpose of which was to help task force leadership more clearly see the battlefield and the events that unfolded thereupon.
  4. 4. Each operation was extremely time-sensitive such that immediately after approval of the tape I boarded a helicopter to deliver it to the site of the after-action review (AAR).
Graduate Schooling:
  • • Recently audited a Global Executive MBA program Leadership class.  Contributed to the group activity.  This required learning a computer program and training scenario within 15 minutes.
  1. 5. Can you devote minimum 10-15 school days per year (not including travel time)?
Yes
  • • I have a flexible schedule at my primary job.
  1. 6. Are you willing to do difficult homework, and have every aspect of your training skills scrutinized?
Yes
  1. 1. I have discipline, focus and take constructive criticism (CC) well.
  2. 2. Experience receiving and giving CC.
  3. 3. I can put ego aside in the interest of accelerating my learning.
  4. 4. I plan to approach this in a manner similar to my Information Technology Oracle Database certification.  This required formal training, self-directed learning and practical application and 4 challenging certification exams.
  1. 5. Have you read the Twist of the Wrist books?
Yes
  1. 1. I highlighted and tabbed them
  2. 2. I drew diagrams in them of concepts to deepen my understanding
  3. 3. I bought copies for my friends at the Washington DC IMS Motorcycle Show
  4. 4. I watched the videos repeatedly with BMW R1200RT best friend Joe
  5. 5. I have given away any number of copies of the books to friends.
  6. 6. I have Soft Science, TOTW I & II, the video and both audiobooks
  1. 6. Would you enjoy helping people learn how to ride better?
Absolutely!
  1. 1. I love seeing people grow into their capabilities and power
  2. 2. I have great confidence that most people can to most anything with sufficient training.  For example, when I hear someone listening in some awe to an airborne soldier about jumping out of an airplane, I insist that anyone can do exactly the same – when the training is bite-sized, building-block stacking and architected to set the student up for success and build confidence through gradually accumulating competence.
Dear All,
We are looking for qualified instructor candidates.  Following is a
description of we need, and after that an application.
If you are interested, or think you might qualify, please read the following
carefully, and return only the application, beginning at: INSTRUCTOR
APPLICATION.
While I know many of you, and generally like to hear from you, please only
respond if you are qualified and seriously interested.
Regards,
Cobie Fair
Chief Instructor
California Superbike School
I’ll see if I can summarize it in a few words what is needed by us:
1.  Racing experience is preferred.  Really we have to see the riding to answer if the riding skill level will be adequate.  Most of our students are street riders, but we do need someone that can set an excellent example for a broad range of skills.
I plan to test for my roadracing license in 2012.
2.  Friendly, personable, upbeat, high ethical standards, fit in with the rest of our team is a must.
  1. 1. I maintain a youthful, positive outlook.
  2. 2. I have a Can-do, get-it-done attitude that I learned as a young lieutenant in the Army
  3. 3. High ethical standards informed by my experience as an Army officer, parent, Top Secret clearance and other positions of responsibility
  4. 4. I have worked with friendly, personable and upbeat teammates at REI in the service of outdoor-adventure customers
  5. 5. I have my 3rd interview with a Maryland Apple Store soon.  The Apple process requires great interpersonal skills and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and to troubleshoot.
Work towards and within the California Superbike School would trump other commitments.  California Superbike School is my top priority.
3.  Excellent communication and observation skills.  Also willing to be trained and do homework.  The instructor training is vigorous, not for the wimpy.  Every aspect of what you do is examined, honed, tested, and improved n a regular basis.
  1. 1. Well-honed listening skills from mentoring, corporate offices, training, retail experience and everything in between.
  2. 2. Performed 33 After-Action Reviews with Army combat platoons at the US Army National Training Center near Barstow, California where the doctrinal approach was the Socratic method and facilitating self-learning.
  3. 3. Briefed and served as master of ceremonies for international military student social events attended by Colonels and General officers.
  4. 4. Fantastic written skills
  5. 5. Conducted negotiations with property owners, port authorities and utilities managers for use of pier space and contracted labor/equipment support in contingency operation in Haiti.
  6. 6. Led, briefed, coached and motivated southside Chicago factory operations team members.
  7. 7. Successfully completed U.S. Army Staff Officer briefing training.  This involved small-group instruction and video feedback.
  8. 8. Facilitated planning discussions and in-progress reviews (IPR) with crusty Ship Captains and HarborMasters.  I have prepared and presented Unit Status Reports (USR) and Commander’s Training Guidance briefings.
Relevant feedback from clients includes:
  1. 1. I worked closely with Justin Giron for three years as a configuration manager and junior database administrator.  In that time I came to know Justin as a mentor with an unselfish desire to learn and share knowledge with his peers.
  2. 2. As a mentor, Justin taught me his trade.  Day after day he patiently gave me pointers and shared his knowledge of the database
  3. 3. Justin was proactive about knowledge sharing.  He took it upon himself to create a procedure for updating and documenting all aspects of the database to ensure that those working with him or who followed him would be up to speed quickly and completely.  As one of those people, this was a great help to me.
  4. 4. Justin’s ability to quickly assess …
  5. 5. As a mentor, coworker, and friend, Justin is unsurpassed in my opinion
  6. 6. Justin became a very valuable resource because he has the ability to communicate to stakeholders at various levels in layman’s terms what was sometimes very technical information. I observed this during formal briefings and milestone reviews, whenever he prepared written documents and during informal verbal exchanges. He represented the management team’s interests at every turn. He knows how to focus on key issues.
  7. 7. Finally, Justin is very personable. He has a wonderful personality, a great outlook on life and relates well to a wide array of people. His interpersonal insights
  8. 8. He shares information and encourages a participative process
  9. 9. He asks probing questions, allows others to express themselves and is very diplomatic
  10. 10. He’s ambitious, articulate, persuasive and thinks outside the box.
  11. 11. He has a unique blend of technical and people skills …
  12. 12. His patience and expertise have provided invaluable support to our personnel.  He works well with communicating ideas, gathering requirements and seeking input from customers, managers and technicians.  His services are always greatly appreciated within the WINTEL organization.
  13. 13. Justin is very patient when explaining things to you to make sure that you understand.  If there were questions that he didn’t have an immediate answer to, he found out and got back to you within a rapid amount of time.  He also used first names which is important and remembered them so that he identifies with you.  That is a very good work ethic and effective when teaching people how to do something.
  14. 14. Made one feel as an equal, even though his database knowledge surpassed most, he always listened to suggestions with an open mind.
  15. 15. Interfaces well with the client:  professional demeanor.
  16. 16. When other members of the team sought information about Justin’s job, he would quickly and thoroughly research the topic and get back to them.
  17. 17. In the past you have been a good ear to listen to our problems and give guidance . . . Through the new EA Remedy process you have been great at listening to our needs and addressing them.  So it appears that Listening is one of your many strong points.  It is truly hard to find people with this quality.
  18. 18. Consistently demonstrated a positive attitude towards everyone involved with the SLA Metrics Database.
  19. 19. .  He provided guidance when we needed it and was always available for our questions.
  20. 20. He displayed a thorough knowledge of the data and the database while presenting that knowledge at a level I could easily comprehend.
  21. 21. Justin has been prompt in replying to questions and has always been courteous in seting, and keeping, mutually agreed upon appointments.
  22. 22. . . . your strong points are your willingness to learn, eagerness to please customers and understand their work environment . . . you are a pleasure to work with and that you might want to consider taking some sort of software development course
  23. 23. Without Mr. Giron’s dedicated, on-call support for this effort, our company would have been unable to provide these metrics to our client as required in our contract.  His dedication to project and detailed approach to work makes him an excellent employee and a dedicated asset to any effort he is assigned to.
4.  The positions are part time for independent contractors but we need a minimum of 10-15 school days per year.
Not a problem
5. Tryout is not paid.  That is usually 1 day at a racetrack, you provide your own bike and gear.
Absolutely
Not a problem for an opportunity to be a Coach and member of the cadre at the  world’s premiere high performance riding school
6.  After the tryout, there is a short probation period, but we pay all travel and other expenses, you use our bike, gear, etc.  Probation period depends on you and how much work you are putting into your training.
I’ll look forward to the opportunity to prove my skills and evidence the hard work it took to build them.
7.  After probation, instructors are paid according to their instructor skill level, how many of our training programs they have completed.  Starts about $150 per day, goes up from there.
My mission is training people in a sport that I love.
Payment will be helpful to defray costs, but my priority is the  opportunity to train and lead high performance riders and have the privilege of spending time with a high-quality leadership team.
Getting all these together in the same package is the hard part.  Truthfully
we are a very dedicated, serious-about-being-the-best bunch, and it shows.
About 1 in 12 that apply even get accepted for the training, much less make
it past the probation stage.  If you have it in mind that this is just a
prestigious job for you show others how well you ride, that it will be a cool
way to improve your own riding and get lots of track time, then this is not
the right thing for you, and your reasons for coming are not the same as ours.
We are a school, we train riders and racers and we do that totally.  We don’t
give jobs to our friends because we like them.

resolved by initial direct communications between myself and CSS, the claim
or dispute shall be settled by binding arbitration.  The American Arbitration
Association (AAA) shall arbitrate such dispute unless another third party
arbitrator is agreed upon in writing by both parties.  The arbitration shall
be conducted either in accordance with the  Arbitration Procedures of the AAA
which are in effect at the time of the arbitration or, if an alternative
arbitrator is agreed upon, in accordance with the then current rules and
procedures of that other third party arbitrator.  In the event I am enrolled
in the instructor training program by CSS, then CSS’s published policies and
procedures for resolution, mediation and arbitration of disputes with
trainees or instructors, including but not limited to those stated in CSS’s
confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement, shall replace this agreement to
arbitrate.
______5.   I acknowledge and agree that CSS may  — but does not necessarily
— hire successful graduates of the instructor training program as
independently contracted instructors. I further acknowledge and agree that
nothing in this application and nothing in communications between me and CSS
representatives or associates during the application, interview and/or
testing process is intended to create an offer of employment or a contract of
employment between me and CSS. I further acknowledge and agree that no
promises or representations contrary to any of the points made in these five
numbered paragraphs are binding on CSS unless stated in writing and signed by
me and an authorized CSS representative.
For those filling this out via e-mail by returning the  completed
application, you are agreeing to the above 5 points.
